Broken River Accommodation
One of the great joys of NZ club fields is the on-mountain accommodation, and Broken River is no exception. Very affordable accommodation is available on-mountain at Broken River in three lodges. The accommodation is generally ski-in and only a short walk to the lifts. Other options are to stay off-mountain in a holiday house in Castle Hill, or accommodation along Highway 73, or a town such as
Springfield, or choose some
accommodation in Methven.

On-Mountain Broken River Accommodation
Lyndon Lodge is the accommodation that most visitors stay in. It is located next to the ticket office and the inclinometer. Dinner and breakfast are included in the package and there are only light duties, so this is the place to stay if you want to put your feet up after a big day on the slopes. They sell alcoholic beverages so you don’t even have to BYO.
The beds are generally bunk beds in shared rooms and there is one private room with a double bed. This is a popular room so book early. The rooms are tiny and some of the double beds are loft beds. You’ll need to be good at climbing up ladders. Girls perhaps pack your pyjamas as sleepwear rather than a nightie! BYO linen or sleeping bag, or linen can be supplied for a small fee.
The communal living area has awesome views and is a great place to perch and read a book. The décor is typical of club field accommodation but this completely adds to the whole friendly experience. Flashy furnishings would just seem wrong!
From Lyndon Lodge it’s a 10 minute walk up to the first ropetow via a path and steps. At the end of the day it’s generally possible for confident riders to ski down a path in time for après at the lodge.
Broken River Lodge is where many of the club members stay. The accommodation is “club style” with bunkrooms of 12 guests per room, BYO sleeping bags and semi-catering. The food for breakfast and dinner is provided but guests partake in cooking and cleaning duties.
White Star Chalet is the backpackers’ option with complete self-catering.
For all three lodges, package rates are available that include lift tickets and lessons.
Springfield (1:00 hr drive)
Slightly further afield is the rural town of
Springfield that was put on the map by a Simpson’s doughnut (or donut as Homer would spell it). Thankfully this town doesn't have too much in common with the Springfield town featured in the Simpsons cartoon. A nice accommodation option is the
Springfield Lodge & Motel or there are a couple of other
Springfield accommodation options.
Methven (1:10 hr drive)
Some people who visit Broken River may base themselves in Methven (which is the base town for Mt Hutt) where there is a good variety of restaurants and bars. From Methven you can ski Mt Hutt plus some of the other club fields in the area.

Christchurch (1:45 drive)
Another option could be to stay in Christchurch and commute each day.
