All the resort facilities at Mt Hutt are located within or close to the day lodge. The day lodge is reasonably modern and contains all the required services. These include eating facilities, child care, ski school, ski and snowboard equipment rental, and lockers. The ski lockers are free overnight for those who rent equipment on the hill.
Mt Hutt Ski Hire & Snowboard Rentals
The Mt Hutt ski hire set-up is well organised. The quality of the standard rental equipment is good and there are performance rental skis and snowboards with strap-in binding systems available.
Mt Hutt ski hire is more expensive than snowboard and Methven ski hire, but it is advantageous if you plan to spend multiple days at Mt Hutt. It has the benefit of not having to lug equipment up and down the mountain, and allows the ability to swap and change equipment as required.
There are two Methven ski hire shops, all providing a range of standard equipment, performance gear and powder skis.
Both Mt Hutt and the hire shops in Methven have refund policies in the (likely!) event that Mt Hutt is closed.
Facilities for Children
Skiwiland crèche is for 2 to 5 year olds, and the Skiwi pack is
available for ages 4-5 which has a combination of indoor childcare and a
little skiing tuition. Mt Hutt has the advantage that it offers various
packages, some of which include lunchtime supervision but not lunch
itself.
Kea club is for ages 6-12 and involves ski school which runs
simultaneously with adult ski school. It is possible to get a full day
package (10am-4pm) which includes a couple of lessons, and supervision
in the non-lesson times (including supervision over the lunch break but
not lunch itself).
Mt Hutt Ski School
Mt Hutt offers tuition for boarding, skiing and telemarking in a
group format for 1 hour, 50 minutes, and private lessons in 1, 3 or 5
hour blocks. Prices for private lessons are a little cheaper than at the
other big commercial ski resorts, whilst group lessons are fairly
comparable.
A whole range of other development programs for children, youth and adults are available.
Eating On Mountain
Huber’s Hut is the highlight of dining on-mountain at Mt Hutt. It is a
lovely café with old-style western saloon décor that is cosy and
inviting. There is an upstairs area with great couches and a sundeck
outside to catch all the on-slope action. The coffee is terrific and the
food basic, but tasty.
The day lodge features a huge cafeteria that has little charm, especially in comparison to Huber’s Hut, but it’s very functional. It also has a deck for sunny days where you’ll need to “keep your eyes on your fries” as the keas have a bad reputation for stealing food. Keep an eye on your gloves too because they’ll have a crack at anything. They’ve even been known to pick up a beer bottle to take a swig. Beer guzzling keas!
Methven Ski & Snowboard Rentals
Another option is to rent your gear in Methven which is more ideal if you are going to hit up several other ski areas nearby.
