Where is Falls Creek Australia?

Falls Creek Resort is located in Victoria, 387km northeast of Melbourne by road, a drive that takes 4.5 to 5 hours). Falls Creek is 123km southeast of Albury (less than 2 hour drive), and 30km southeast of the little town of Mt Beauty.

Driving to Falls Creek

During winter, the road access to Falls Creek is via Mt Beauty, whilst the Bogong High Plains Road from Omeo to Falls Creek is closed.

The Falls Creek mountain road is a relatively easy drive (relative to Mt Hotham and especially relative to the gnarly New Zealand ski field roads!) but it may still be considered challenging for those inexperienced at driving mountain roads that are snowy or icy.

Wheel chains need to be carried and fitted as directed, and snow chains can be rented from various ski shops in Myrtleford, Ovens or Mt Beauty. Check road conditions before you travel.

See the driving to the Victoria ski resorts page for general tips about driving in the snow, chains and diesel fuel.

Exorbitant resort entry fees need to be paid which include the car parking. Usually you’ll need to get a lift with one of the Falls Creek Resort vehicles to get from the car park back to the lifts.

Day trippers to Falls Creek need to pre-book resort entry because when it's busy and the car park is full, only overnight guests are allowed to proceed up the road.

Getting To Your Accommodation

The village roads are closed during winter, so access to most Falls Creek accommodation is via a costly over-snow transport service. On weekends there can be ridiculously long waits to get up and then down the mountain with your luggage and food.

If you’re lucky enough to have accommodation at the base along the road such as QT Falls Creek, Falls Creek Country Club, or Alpine Woodsmoke, you won’t need to worry about the oversnow transport.

Or if you’re fit and can pack all your gear and food into a big packpack you could hike up to your accommodation, which will save you money and a lot of time on weekends.

Bus to Falls Creek

There are Falls Creek bus services from Melbourne, Melbourne Airport, Albury, Albury Airport and Mt Beauty.

Or if you catch a train to Albury or Wangaratta, there are connecting coach services to get to Falls Creek.

Getting Around Falls Creek

Due to the ski-in ski-out nature of the Falls Creek Village (when there’s adequate snow), it’s incredibly easy to get around the village during the day by skiing or snowboarding and using the lifts.

There are free village shuttles that provide transport throughout the village (no luggage) from early morning to early evening.

Otherwise there are snow taxis, but there can be long waits for this service during peak times such as Friday or Saturday night.

Or one of the lovely things about Falls Creek is walking around the village. It’s rather hilly so if you’re a sea level dweller and not super fit you’re likely to get rather puffed, and you’ll potentially need some decent snow boots with good grip.

Other Ski Resorts Nearby

Falls Creek Ski Resort and Mt Hotham are really close as the currawong flies, and only a 6 minute helicopter flight, yet it’s a slow 130km by road between the two ski resorts.

Helicopter flights between Falls Creek and Mt Hotham are only for day trippers (ie no luggage), and the helis only fly on fine days.
