Hokkaido Freeride Camp
The Hokkaido island is world-famous for its dry powder and the southwest portion of the island gets the most of it. The Hokkaido Freeride Camp includes 7 to 8 days of lift-accessed off-piste skiing with occasional short hikes, and one to two days of backcountry ski touring (optional). Flexibility is key and skiing the best snow on any given day is the priority.
You will be based in the town of
Kutchan, so unlike stays at a ski resort such as Niseko, it feels like the authentic Japan where you can walk to izakayas, ramen bars and other small Japanese restaurants. Or if you want to cook at home, that's a possibility too.
Highlights of the Hokkaido Freeride Camp from Sherpas Ride include long powder lines in
Kokusai resort, a backcountry tour to Mount Yotei volcano, skiing hidden gems in the back of
Rusutsu resort, playing around Shiribetsu-dake and countless powder runs in
Moiwa.
To complete the experience, you can try different Japanese restaurants and onsens (hot pools).
Skis, snowboards, and avalanche equipment are provided for your use in Japan.
If you have any questions or want to double check availability, you can
make a booking request.
Guiding & Equipment
The tour is operated by UIAGM qualified mountain guides at a maximum ratio of 6 guest to 1 guide and you will be provided with an avalanche safety briefing at the beginning of the trip. Avalanche safety gear rental (beacon, shovel, probe and backpack) are provided at no cost as part of the package, however you can bring your own gear if you have it.
Ability & Fitness Level
This trip is for advanced skiers & snowboarders who should be able to ski /ride steep runs with confidence in variable conditions and should have some experience in skiing / riding powder.
As about 20% of this trip is ski touring/splitboarding, you should have a good-level of fitness, although you can opt out of the backcountry days if you wish.
The group size is a maximum of 6 people. There are often 2 groups at a time, so you can choose between a faster and slower one (alternatively more freeride or ski touring/splitboarding orientated).
