Hokkaido Road Trip

The Hokkaido island is world-famous for its dry powder and this tour heads to the best areas in Hokkaido. This Hokkaido Road Trip from Sherpas Ride offers the perfect mix of lift-accessed freeride and ski touring/splitboarding, and the itinerary is somewhat flexible because skiing the best snow on any given day is the priority.

For part of the trip, you will be based in the town of Kutchan, so unlike stays at a ski resort such as Niseko, it feels like the authentic Japan where you can walk to izakayas, ramen bars and other small Japanese restaurants. For the other part of the trip, you'll be based in Furano which is also delightfully unresortified.

Highlights of the Hokkaido Road Trip include powder lines at Rusutsu, Moiwa and Niseko, a backcountry tour on the iconic Mount Yotei volcano near Niseko, touring on the famous Asahidake volcano and other parts of the Daisetsuzan National Park, hitting the steep powder at Furano, skiing a hidden gem, and soaking in onsen baths, including a natural outdoor hot spring at Tokachidake.

Skis, snowboards, and avalanche equipment are provided for your use in Japan.

If you have any questions or want to double check availability, you can make a booking request.

Guiding & Equipment

The tour is operated by UIAGM qualified mountain guides at a maximum ratio of  6 guest to 1 guide and you will be provided with an avalanche safety briefing at the beginning of the trip. Avalanche safety gear rental (beacon, shovel, probe and backpack) are provided at no cost as part of the package, however you can bring your own gear if you have it.

Ability & Fitness Level

This trip is for advanced skiers & snowboarders who should be able to ski /ride steep runs with confidence in variable conditions and should have some experience in skiing / riding powder.

As this trip involves a good deal of ski touring/splitboarding, you should have a very good level of fitness.

The group size is a maximum of 6 people. There are often 2 groups at a time, so you can choose between a faster and slower one (alternatively more freeride or ski touring/splitboarding orientated).

Itinerary

Flexibilty is the key and this is a sample itinerary. The itinerary will be adjusted according to weather conditions and guest requirements. This trip may start in Kutchan or Furano area.

Day 1 - Arrival to Japan
  • Transfer from airport and be driven to the house
  • The guides will assist with equipment set up
  • Head out for dinner

Day 2 - Rusutsu

  • Rusutsu is a ski resort with fantastic tree skiing and some backcountry options
  • After skiing there will be an avalanche awareness presentation and you will learn how to navigate safely through backcountry terrain so you can go ski touring in the upcoming days.

Day 3 - Moiwa

  • Moiwa is a powder skiing gem that often offers fresh lines
  • After skiing the group will practise beacon searches

Day 4 - Niseko

  • Niseko is famous for a reason — comprised of 4 resorts (Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village, and Annupuri). While very popular, if you know where to go, you can still score some of the best lines on Hokkaido especially from the peak of Annupuri.
  • Option to go night skiing at Niseko

Day 5 - Hike Up Mt Yotei

  • You will hike up Mt. Yotei volcano and get to ski inside the crater. The 1500 vertical meter descent down Yotei will be the highlight of your Japanese trip. This tour takes from 4 – 6 hours and can be avoided by taking a resort day.
  • In the evening, an onsen will be on the cards

Day 6 - Day Off or Unguided Day

  • You can enjoy the Niseko/Moiwa area unguided, take the day off and chill, or visit the Whiskey Distillery or Otaru.
  • The group will then load the van for a transfer to Furano.

Day 7 - Backcountry Day in Daisetsuzan National Park

  • Central Hokkaido is a prime area for ski touring and you will be taken to some favorite spots which are still off the radar.
  • After skiing, the group will jump into a natural onsen in the trees at the foot of Tokachi-dake

Day 8 - Furano

  • Furano is our favourite resort in Central Hokkaido and you will be shown the best steep tree lines on offer.

Day 9 - Backcountry Day on Asahidake

  • Hike up to the summit of Asahidake (weather pending), drop into the powder-filled crater, and ski along the steam going out of the volcanic surface. Hard to imagine, right?
  • Have an onsen after skiing/riding

Day 10 - Yubari, Kamui or Tomamu

  • There are way more resorts than you can ski during the trip so the guide will pick one of these “hidden” gems and ski every bit of powder there.
  • In the evening, farewell party in Sapporo

Day 11 - Depart

  • Transfer to the airport and depart Japan, or stay for more days of powder
