Honshu Powder Trip

The Honshu Powder Trip takes in many of the best ski areas of the Nagano and Niigata Prefectures including the very snowy Myoko Kogen, the big Hakuba, and the historic onsen town and ski area, Nozawa Onsen. About 70% of the skiing/riding will be lift-accessed terrain, whilst approximately 30% of the time you will be ski touring/splitboarding further into the backcountry zones.

From a base in Myoko Kogen, your guide will be able to choose the best option for each day. Freeride resort options include Myoko Kogen (Akakura Kanko, Suginohara, Akakura Onsen), Seki Onsen, Lotte Arai, Madarao, Tangram, Happo One of Hakuba, Tsugaike of Hakuba, Tenjin, and Naeba. Ski touring can be in the Mt. Myoko area, the backcountry of Lotte Arai, Tenjin or Seki Onsen. Backcountry skiing is limitless.

For most of the trip you'll be staying in a Japanese hotel in Myoko, sleeping in a traditional tatami floor room on futons, and bathing in the onsite onsen.

If you have any questions or want to double check availability, you can make a booking request.

The trip is for individuals, couples or small groups to join one of the fixed date mixed group tours. The group size is a maximum of 6 people.

Itinerary

Flexibilty is the key and this is a sample itinerary. The itinerary will be adjusted according to weather conditions and guest requirements.

Day 1 - Arrival to Japan
  • Private transfer to the lodge in Myoko
  • Set up equipment
  • The group will head out to dinner

Day 2 - Madarao/Tangram

  • Madarao and Tangram are two interconnected resorts that offer easy access to freeride skiing with the potential of short hikes to some longer backcountry lines.
  • In the evening there will be an avalanche awareness presentation. You will learn how to navigate safely through backcountry terrain so you can go ski touring in upcoming days.

Day 3 - Seki Onsen

  • Seki receives up to 20 metres of snowfall a season and it's a powder skiing gem with two lifts, one of which is a famous pizza box chair lift. Seki also offers great backcountry options.
  • You will share the resort with a bunch of locals and a few foreigners who go off the beaten path enough to reach it.
  • Avalanche rescue and beacon practice after skiing
  • Onsen

Day 4 - Backcountry Day Mt Myoko Area

  • Fancy a ski inside the crater? Conditions pending, this is on the cards.

Day 5 - Lotte Arai or Another Nearby Ski Area

  • Lotte is the most modern out of Myoko resorts. Fast lifts take you up to the main bowl, only a short hike away from an epic powder line. Plus backcountry of Lotte is a whole different playground.

Day 6 - Day Off or Unguided Day

  • If you want to ski/ride on this day you'll need to cover your own lift pass. You can enjoy the Myoko Kogen area unguided, take the day off and chill, eat famous soba in town or visit a shrine in Nagano.

Day 7 - Nozawa Onsen

  • Nozawa Onsen offers some great lines straight from the lift-accessed ridge. You will end up right on the slope, ready for another run.
  • After skiing, you can check out one of the countless onsens of Nozawa Onsen and sample hot buns in the streets of this historical village.

Day 8 - Backcountry Day Mt Myoko Area

  • Undisclosed location

Day 9 - Akakura Onsen

  • Ski as many laps in powder-filled trees as you can possibly handle.

Day 10 - Happo One, Hakuba

  • Hakuba Valley is famous, and you will ski some great lines with the longest vertical in the area in this zone which is still a little off the radar

Day 11 - Depart

  • Transfer to the airport and depart Japan, or stay for more days of powder

Accommodation

Guests will be staying in a traditional Japanese hotel which has amazing hot springs, or so called onsen right on the premises. We will be staying in rooms with tatami to experience the real, authentic housing. Guests sleep in comfortable futon bedding, while amenities include yukata robes, a washstand and an attached toilet. Bathroom facilities are shared.
