Rishiri Trip

This incredible ski & snowboarding adventure starts with 4 days climbing and descending an inactive volcano on the Japanese island of Rishiri and then heads to central Hokkaido to explore some of Japan's most famous powder skiing areas.

You will fly from Sapporo to Rishiri Island which is like no other location in Japan, the volcano juts up out of the centre of the island providing a powder playground suitable for the gods. The volcano offers moderate to steep ridge-lines and gullies with long open runs and untracked powder in every direction. You are unlikely to see many if any other people skiing / riding the volcano whilst there. The first 300m of vertical ascent will be assisted by snowmobile and after that it is human power all the way.

On one of the 4 days you will attempt to summit the volcano with your guide/group where you will get a feast of incredible 360 degree views down every aspect of the volcano and around the island.

After 4 incredible days of touring Rishiri Isand you will head back to Hokkaido flying from Rishiri to Sapporo airport in Hokkaido. From there you will spend the next 4 days exploring the back & sidecountry some of the best powder skiing areas in Japan including Furano, Asahidake, Kurodake and an undisclosed secret location.  Some of these days you will have the assistance of lifts to access big vertical however touring will still be a part of each day.

Guiding & Equipment

The tour is operated by UIAGM qualified mountain guides at a maximum ratio of  6 guest to 1 guide and you will be provided with an avalanche safety briefing at the beginning of the trip. Avalanche safety gear rental (beacon, shovel, probe and backpack) are provided at no cost as part of the package however you can bring your own gear if you have it.

Ability & Fitness Level

This trip is for Strong Intermediate to Advanced skiers & snowboarders who should be able to ski /ride steep runs with confidence in variable conditions and should have some experience in skiing / riding powder.

As nearly 50% of this trip is touring, you should have a good-level of fitness and be able to tour up to 1,200 vertical metres per day. There is a total of 4-5 days of touring on this 9-day trip.
