A magical week in Kamikawa

06/03/2025
I spent a magical week at Yukiumi House in Kamikawa, deep in the powder paradise of northern Hokkaido. The daily routine? Hike up, ski down, soak in an onsen, then devour dinner back at the house. Rinse and repeat. Our group was a dream team—a great mix of skiers and boarders who all shared one thing in common: a love for chasing fresh lines and a willingness to suffer on the uphill for the thrill of the ride down. I traveled with one friend (both female, late 30s), and we were joined by three solo travelers—late 30s, early 40s, and a legendary skier in his late 60s who made us all hope we’d still be charging like that at his age.

Sergi was our fearless leader and the owner of Yukiumi House. He knows his stuff—where to find the best snow, when to call it a day, and how to keep the vibes high. Not only is he a top-tier guide, but he’s also just genuinely fun to hang out with. Whether we were chasing fresh turns or trading songs in the van or playing cards over sake at the house after dinner, he made the whole experience feel effortless.

Ayaka was the mastermind in the kitchen. The food was amazing—hearty, home-cooked meals that felt like a warm hug after long days in the mountains. Every dinner was a feast, and Ayaka made sure we were always taken care of (and well-fed).

The accommodations were basic but cozy. It’s not a luxury chalet, but who needs that when you have warm beds, good company, and a space that feels like home. Plus, as a female traveler, I felt completely comfortable the entire time—an underrated but crucial part of any trip.

Sergi and Yukiumi House is the choice if you want epic skiing, great company, and a week where the only thing you need to worry about is whether your legs can handle another lap. Looking forward to the next time I get to go back.

I had a wonderful experience at Yukiumi House in Kamikawa, Hokkaido. Sergi is a spectacular guide and host and he is the reason I came back to Hokkaido for another backcountry experience with him as my guide. He has a deep knowledge of many parts of Hokkaido and knows where to go to find great skiing, whether it’s hiking a national park or ducking ropes at a resort. The accommodations are authentic and comfortable for a mountain home. The home cooked meals to start and end each day were a real treat and a very unique experience. I would highly recommend Yukiumi House if you are looking for a real experience, don’t mind hiking and love deep powder turns without waiting in lift lines. It was a great experience with great people!

Sergi and Gerard run Yukiumi house lodging and guiding company. They live in Japan all year long and are basically locals in Central/Northern Hokkaido. They are great fun to ride with and are very professional. Check their insta and you will see they know how to find the goods. Call them and up and see what they can offer for you, you won’t be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this trip! Sergi and Ayako took good care of us. Both, the food and the Backcountry touring were amazing.
Ayako prepared the best breakfast and the best dinners for us! ChoooOoOo oishi! I also loved the onigiri for lunch.
Sergi explored the Backcountry with us and delivered the lightest powder ever. I fell in love with Kurodake.!
The rooms were cosy and spacious enough for two people. The living room was great to hang out with this nice group of people we meat for the first time.

Unfortunately we had little snow in the week we were based in Furano. However the staff really went out of their way to offer the best choices in a challenging week. Yukiumi House specialises in back country but we were more interested in side country. Whilst I had my back country emergency gear, my son-in-law did not which meant that he had to pay Yen 8,000 per day for beacon, probe and shovel. It would have been useful if that was made clear on the website because I could have arranged it beforehand.

The accommodation was very basic and cramped. We were 7 guests and 2 staff in a small 4 bedroom house with one toilet and tiny bathroom. Having said that, it is reasonable to say that luxury is not necessarily a top requirement for back country adventurers.

We stayed at Yukiumi House Furano for 3 nights. It was very comfortable, traditional style, amazing breakfast included. The best part was the host Sergei - very knowledgeable about the local areas but also so generous with his time.
We will be back for sure!

deepest days of my life

I was coming pretty spoiled, as I am a good skier that did skied all over. They stole my heard, and paralize my mind with what the delivered. We just dive into snow. We had to put a bit of effort but was totally payed off, I had for sure what was the deepest day of my life and You never know when its going to happen again or if ever is going to happen. They got the spot, they know where to take you, they know what are you looking for and it was always in super familiar atmosphere. For sure they make me feel I was part of that, I wasn't one more client, I was one of the crew and this was so special.

Its was amazing week for me!! Gerard the guide evaluate my level and worked from there. We score every day untouched powder, it was unbelivable. I was loving touring, but after this tour I realize how important is to go earn your turns if you are looking for untouched snow. The guys from the lodge know very good the terrain and where to hit best conditions of the day. They are very professionals with the protocols, I was feeling safe all time. I would say I scored some of the best ski days of my life and its not a joke!!! I will repeat with the boys for sure
