Mammoth Activities - Winter

During summer, Mammoth is a gateway to the spectacular Yosemite National Park. Unfortunately in winter, the road from Mammoth into Yosemite is closed due to snow, as is the road to the Devil’s Postpile, but there are still plenty of other very scenic spots in the Mammoth region to visit.

The Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center offers 30km of groomed trails that provide plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the scenery. These trails are also open to snowshoers, and rentals and lessons are available if required.

Scenic Trips

Another way to check out the sweeping mountain views is with a Snowcat Tour, where you can see the backcountry from the comfort of a heated luxury snowcat. Daytime tours head from outside the Mammoth Mountain Inn (near Main lodge) up to Minaret Summit where you can partake in a picnic. Après ski tours are also available.

Mammoth Snowmobile Adventures is the perfect activity for first-timers or seasoned snowmobiling experts. They offer 1.5 hour or 3 hour guided tours as well as self-guided tours. The tours leave from near Main Lodge.

The South Tufa of Mono Lake is very interesting for a quick look. The area has been instated as a State National Reserve to preserve the fascinating natural limestone tufa tower formations. It’s located about 30 miles north of Mammoth Ski Resort (about 6 miles off Highway 395 between the two June Lake roads), and you’ll need a car to get there. Check the road conditions as sometimes the road is closed in winter.

The Bodie State Historic Park is also great to visit if you have a car – it’s off Highway 395 (towards Lake Tahoe), 60 miles north of Mammoth. Bodie is a fascinating old ghost town from the gold digging era.

Family Activities

The Woolly Tubing Park is plenty of fun and has lift serviced tubing lanes. It’s a little bit out of the way though, on the road between the Village and Main Lodge. Another great family activity is to head to the bowling alley in Mammoth Lakes.
