The town of Arosa is the terminus for the fabulous railway line from Chur (see map here). The train journey takes around 1hr. Trains travel to Chur direct from Zurich main station in 1¼hr (see map here).

Chur has a superbly integrated train, bus and tram (light rail) station at its centre, a short walk from the old town. Trains connect to anywhere in Switzerland & Austria with ease. The trains are part of the Rhaetian railway (RhB or Rhaetische) which includes some of the most scenic lines in the world. The train to St Moritz and beyond over the Bernina Pass to Italy is particular special, not only for its scenery, but also the engineering feats.

Anyone staying in the Chur Altstadt (old town) will enjoy the ease of utilising bus & light rail stops adjacent to the west gates of the city. The stops are on the Arosa, Laax & Lenzerheide ski resort lines.

Driving to Arosa

As with many ski resorts in Switzerland, the road to Arosa from Chur is not for the fainthearted and there is a driving ban on the road from midnight to 6am every night during winter. Unless you already have a car, the best way to get to Arosa is via the train from Zurich. Failing that, Arosa is 29km or 45min from Chur by road in good conditions and 155km (2¼hr) from Zurich airport.

Chur is just off the major E43 motorway that travels through the upper Rhine River valley & links eastern Switzerland with Austria, Germany & Italy. Travel by car from Munich, Milan & Innsbruck is relatively straight forward with travel times of around 3½ to 4hr in winter.

Car Rental

All the major airports & cities have car hire available. The cheapest rates are at Zurich airport. One provider at Chur train station has high rental rates, but low security deposits. Two additional providers in downtown Chur have low rates but high security deposits. Go figure! Rates are slightly higher in Switzerland than other parts of Europe, but the security deposits can be excessive, so read the fine print before hiring any vehicles. Renting cars in Italy, Austria or Germany is cheaper! Renting cars in Italy does have issues relating to winterisation though - beware.

Getting Around Arosa Ski Resort & Village

Arosa is spread along 3km of valley starting from a series chalets above the Obersee, past the train station and Tschuggen ski lifts, through the main town centre & Innerarosa , then ending at the Hörnli gondola talstation (base). An excellent bus network links all of the areas on a regular basis. A highlight of the bus trips is to see the startled looks on the eyes of skiers hurtling down the piste into Hörnli as the bus crosses the trail in front of them. True story! The bus routes also include the Prätschli & Untersee lodging areas & car parks too.

The relative short distance & paltry 100m elevation difference means walking the main village area is a good alternative to waiting for a bus.

Nearby Ski Resorts

Arosa is close to Chur which links seamlessly to some of Switzerland’s biggest & best known ski resorts. By train you can easily travel to Davos Klosters & St Moritz. By bus direct to Laax and Lenzerheide (or use the ski lifts).

A host of smaller ski resorts can also be reached by public transport including the local ski resorts of Hochwang and Tschiertschen, plus some further afield like Bivio, Brigels and Savognin.

Chur’s Rhaetian railway connects in the west with the Matterhorn Gotthard line at Disentis/Muster opening up a world of ski by rail opportunity. Ski resorts at Disentis, Andermatt Sedrun, Aletsch Arena, Crans Montana & Zermatt are all directly accessible from the train. Go forth and explore!
