Hotel Alto Nevados Review

Resort dates 8/26/17 to 9/3/17.
Hotel pros:
Nice sized and comfortable room, good food, good bar, good location, and good access to ski hill. The employees everywhere but the front desk are helpful, friendly, and cheery.
Hotel cons:
There are two hotel managers and they both speak English, but they are only there Saturday and Sunday mornings for a few hours.
Approximately 20 to 25% of the guests spoke English. For instance Germans would communicate with English rather than German. The vast majority of the guests are Brazillian.
The front desk employees that you rely on for information do not speak English, and they make no attempt to communicate. The front desk employees do not like to help you because your questions and or issues often require considerable amount of work on their part to remedy. It took several days for us to realize they do understand but they pretend they do not understand so that they do not have to expend any energy to assist you. Whenever you need help it involves contacting upper management who is not located at the resort. From speaking to the locals it appears the management system is from the top down absolutely for everything. Non managerial employees (All but the 2 managers who are only there for a little while on Saturday and Sunday) are not allowed to make any decisions no matter how minor.
When you check in they just give you a pile of paper without any English translations. The English speaking managers will help answer questions if you have any.
No coffee in rooms
No coffee or water available until the restaurant opens at 8 am. Note that there is no hot water available in your room in the am hours to make your own coffee.
No hot water in the room until the late afternoon through the evening. Each day it appears they only run the hot water heater starting late afternoon and ending in the evening. At other times the room water is not even tepid, just plain cold.
The hotel, restaurant, and bar are cold. You must wear warm clothing to the bar and restaurant.
The restaurant hours are very late for Americans. 8 am breakfast (hot eggs, etc. are brought out at 8:30 am), 1:30 pm lunch, and 7:30 pm supper. Note the ski hill opens at 9 am.
All 3 of the meals in their package are in the restaurant, along an entrance hallway directly off the ski hill access area. IE you ski in to the hotel along the same hallway as the restaurant. You are not allowed to wear your ski boots into the restaurant at any of the meals. You must return to your room in the am to put your boots on. You must go to your room twice at lunch to take your boots on and to put them back on. At supper it?s ok because you arrive in your regular clothes. They do have a ski storage area where you may drop off your boots, poles, and ski?s. You may leave your boots there while you are in the restaurant.
As an example of hotel life there; 3 days in a row our hotel room was out of toilet paper, the first day when we ran out we just assumed they would refill the toilet paper dispenser the next morning. They did not refill it. We raided the ski hill bathroom for room toilet paper. On the 3rd day I personally asked a housekeeping person for toilet paper and she went to great efforts to make it known that she did not understand what I wanted. I got her to follow me to the room and pointed the empty toilet paper dispenser out to her. She shook her head and raised her hands in a ?don?t know? gesture. I kept at it and she finally went into an empty hotel room and took their toilet paper. This makes me believe the employees are not allowed access to extra toilet paper cause they may steal it, or they try to save costs by not dispensing it to hotel guest. Note the entire hotel, bar, restaurant, and bar all had full dispensers. The housekeeping staff knew we were out of toilet paper but did nothing about it.

As another example of hotel life there my wife and I each received a ski pass that we were unaware were linked to our passport pictures. They have a face scanner at each lift that compares your face to the face on file. We were not informed that each ski pass was specific to each individual. They ski passes are not marked in any way to identify one from the other. They look exactly like hotel digital room cards. Our 2nd day of skiing and we were locked out because the face identification software marked my wife and I unknowingly switching the unmarked ski passes. It took three hours of very frustrating conversations to get the hill to reset them. They had to get ahold of the manager who was not present to allow them to reset the passes. It was ridiculous!
Can you believe they spent that much money on scanners and software for each and every lift and won?t spend any money on gas or wages to operate the snow cats!?

Incredibly Convenient Spot To Stay

22/09/2016
Without staying and paying 5 star, the Hotel Alto Nevados is the best place to stay on-mountain to access the powder at Nevados de Chillan.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Alto Nevados and would happily recommend it to others (and very happily stay there again), although you should be aware that the hotel has some very distinct pros and cons.

Pros
- Its mid-mountain ski-in ski-out location was incredibly convenient.
- The hotel is aesthetically pleasing and has plenty of character – it has a nice mix of rustic and modern fittings using old structures, wood and steel.
- We stayed in a mountain view room, and the views were great.
- The bar has lovely décor and a great ambience.
- The meals are very nice for a 3 star hotel. The range of salads with lunch and dinner was impressive, although there were only a few choices for hot dishes. We were on a full board package and it was great that wine was included with dinner.
- Its proximity to the fabulous hot springs was a major bonus.

Cons
- Noise travelled into our room pretty easily because there is no door between the reception area, the stairs (nothing like people clomping on stairs in their ski boots!), and the rooms, and there was a decent gap under our door. There was also music blaring outside our window during the day.
- At various times we had a shower with tepid water (this seems to be somewhat common in South America).
- The décor in our room was quite nice but the workmanship was really poor and had no attention to detail. For example the painter probably didn’t learn how to colour inside the lines as a child! The coat hooks were barely secured to the wall. A hair dryer was provided but the plug didn’t fit into the power point (and no adaptor was provided).
- The service was not particularly impressive. Sure this is Chile, but the reception staff were nonchalant and no information was provided on check in about amenities or activities. The housekeeping staff forgot to provide towels or toilet paper and after asking for it, it still wasn’t provided.
- Lift tickets weren’t available until just after 9:30am on our first day of skiing. The lifts open at 9:30am but considering it was a powder day, having them at 9am would have been nice.
- The hotel parking was located under snow shed areas.
- The wifi was really bad.
