Skiing & Terrain
Lyngen Alps is the place to go freeriding if you are looking for powder in Scandinavia. It is tucked into the mainland so the snow is drier than in other areas. The mission will be to ski a variety of backcountry terrain - powdery open lines, ocean runs, classic lines in the area, and couloirs (if conditions allow). On this trip, the group will sail to ski secluded places only accessed by ski touring or splitboarding. Expect around 1,000 to 1,200m vertical daily for 6 days.
For expert groups
The typical Ski and Sail Norway trip consists mostly of skiing open sea to summit lines with some tree-skiing. For expert skiers only, it is possible to put together an alternative around the most iconic steep lines and couloirs in Lyngen. To name a few, there is Forhorlttinden, nicknamed “The Godmother of all couloirs”, plus Sofiatinden or Trolvastinden. Those lines are around 40 to 45 degrees. Safety is the priority for the guides. If the conditions are not right, our UIAGM guide has more conservative option for each day. Crossing the Lyngen peninsula with an amazing downhill around Storgalten is also possible.
Boat, Accommodation & Itinerary
Get to Tromsø via Oslo & transfer directly to the boat which will be your home for the next 7 nights. The professional skipper will then take you into the fjords to the first destination. For more info on the boat & accommodation, see the Lodging tab.
Every trip is unique and ski lines are chosen based on group requirements, weather and sailing conditions. You can expect to sail during the evenings, sleep and have breakfast on the boat, ski-tour from the morning, having spectacular snacks at the top & glorious skiing back to the boat. You will taste local fish, try a Norwegian sauna &/or an arctic water dip.
On all of previous trips, the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) have been seen, so you might be equally lucky.
Late lunch & dinner take place on the boat. Evenings are dedicated to sailing to our new destination. See the full program via the Itinerary tab.
Guiding & Equipment
The tour is operated by certified mountain guides at a maximum ratio of 7 guests to 1 guide.
You will need to bring all your own ski touring & splitboard equipment including your own avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, and shovel) plus an avalanche airbag backpack is also recommended, but not mandatory. Some equipment can be rented locally in Tromsø at a nearby rental shop.
Ability & Fitness Level
This trip is for Strong Intermediate to Advanced skiers & snowboarders who should be able to climb with skins & ski /ride powder runs with confidence in variable conditions. You should have previous ski touring or splitboarding experience (at least 3 tours). You should be able to cover at least 1,000m vertical daily for at least 3 days straight. A day off is definitely a possibility, more than that would likely hinder your experience.
