Accommodation in the Sellraintal Villages

To the east of the ski resort on the road from/to Innsbruck, the Sellraintal (Sellrain valley) descends to the nearby villages of St Sigmund (im Sellrain), Gries (im Sellrain) and Sellrain (im nowhere at all!). All are small & quiet but have a good selection of diverse lodgings including some lovely farm stay apartments (usually listed as a Ferienwohnung). Village apartments tend to part of a larger traditional house & come with several bedrooms & kitchen/dining. Perfect for those groups on a budget that want to experience true Austrian alpine living.

The closest of the villages is Sankt Sigmund im Sellrain. Only 8km (less than 10min drive) away, Saint Sigmund offers the closest lodging alternative to the ski resort. At an elevation of over 1500m, Sankt Sigmund can be quite cold & deeply snow-laden throughout winter. Due to its position, the village receives a little less sun than higher up at Kühtai.

Next down the valley is Gries im Sellrain, 13km (14min drive) away from the ski resort. A coupe of large hotels plus numerous apartments, chalets & pension guesthouses are available. With high mountains to its south, similarly to Sankt Sigmund, Gries gets less winter sunshine than Kuehtai.

Last of the Sellraintal villages is Sellrain, 18km (20min drive) from Kuhtai & well on the way to the Inn valley. Sellrain has a sunnier disposition than the higher two villages & some excellent traditional self-contained apartments.

Day Tripping from Innsbruck

In reality though, unless keen to stay in a small village or farm stay, day tripping to Kuhtai is probably just as easy & convenient from Innsbruck. The world's best ski city, Innsbruck is a large cosmopolitan urban zone amongst an outstanding Austrian mountain landscape. A full range of hotel, apartment & guesthouse accommodation options are within the atmospheric old town walls, the surrounding city & mountainside villages.

Innsbruck's 'old town' is sensational. With views up into the mountains & loads of nooks & crannies to explore, staying overnight here is a must. For the full old town experience, one cannot go past the gorgeously ancient Gasthof Weisses Rössl. This fabulous hotel guesthouse has around 600 years of history within its walls. Also try the Hotel Maximilian & Hotel Grauer Bar.

If having a short stay or transiting through Innsbruck, there are excellent hotel options located opposite the central train, bus & tram station. Try the Grand Hotel Europa or Hotel Ibis.

Budget room options that still provide quality are available at several hotels located across the river from the Old Town. Many great hotels are located out of town near the ski resorts, particularly handy for those with a rental car. The Powderhounds have previously stayed in a chalet up towards Nordkette which provided one of our best European ski accommodation experiences ever. If you have a car try the 2 Chalets Innsbruck - rustic, quiet, perfect.

Lodgings in Oetztal

To the west of Kuehtai, towards the Ötztal (Oetz valley), the small hamlet of Ochsengarten (near the Hochoetz ski resort gondola of the same name) has a range of convenient hotels, pensions & guesthouses. Further down in the Oetztal, the town of Oetz is the main centre and has several excellent lodging options, plus all the shops, restaurants, bars & services to go with it. The Ötztal has some of Austria's best ski resorts in it, all accessible by public bus from Oetz.
