Where to Stay in Mayrhofen

The Mayrhofen ski resort has numerous villages dotted around its base, but none is better than the town of the same name, Mayrhofen. It is a vibrant, fun and convenient base for anyone wanting to ski or snowboard anywhere in the Zillertal or Tuxertal. The town has all the transport links, services, bars and restaurants one could ever require. Access to the Mayrhofen ski resort is superb from the centre of town via either the Penken gondola or Ahorn cable car. A huge range of lodging options are available. A small number of ski-in ski-out options are high up in the resort.

Away from the relative ‘hustle and bustle’ of Mayrhofen, there are 5 other access points into with gondolas heading up into the ski resort. Slightly down valley, the villages of Hippach & Schwendau, plus various hamlets including Burgstall & Mühlbach, are close to the Horberg gondola valley station. Even better, higher up the mountainside from Hippach is Mösl with a few wonderful accommodations next to the gondola station. Loads of other options are on the road between Hippach & Mösl.

In the other direction, climbing up into the Tux valley, Finkenberg and Tux have various accommodation options. Finkenberg is small but includes the absolute best resort hotel in the region, Stock Resort Hotel. Access to the ski area is excellent via the new Finkenberger gondola. At Tux, loads of high-quality offerings are available, and access to the ski resort is provided via either the Rastkogel or Eggalm gondolas.

Yet further up the Tux valley, several ski-in hotels are located at the base of Hintertux Glacier ski resort. These are magnificent places to stay if wishing to start early on the glacier.

Mayrhofen Ski-in Ski-out Lodging

Two delightful ski in ski out options that showcase both sides of Mayrhofen ski resort are located on Ahorn and across the valley near the summit of Horberg. Both have the benefit of instant access to the ski slopes on a powder day, but the disadvantage of being away from the fun and services of the Mayrhofen village. Try a night in at least one of them for a full Mayrhofen experience.

Mayrhofen Town Centre Accommodation

Mayrhofen has numerous hotel, apartment and guesthouse accommodation within the town centre. All are within easy walking distance to the Ahorn gondola and Penken ski lifts. If walking in ski boots is not your thing, free ski buses or hotel shuttles are available.

Lodgings close to the Ahorn cable car are in shadow for much of the winter (read - its cold outside!). Sunnier locations are closer to, and beyond, the Penken cable car base. Try the following.

Hippach Ski Accommodation

The Hippach sector of Mayrhofen is perhaps somewhat lower profile that the main centre, but from an accommodation point of view it shouldn’t be. Two fantastic access gondolas, Horberg & Mösl, and several smaller villages offer certainly a more subdued snow holiday experience but are in no way of lesser quality. The pick of the lodgings is a small cluster around the Mösl gondola base. High in a forested alpine valley, the atmosphere is serene compared to the thrust & parry of Mayrhofen. Access to the skiing on Horberg and beyond is stellar.

On the road between Mösl and Hippach, numerous affordable and high-quality accommodation options exist.

Nearer the Horberg gondola valley station, the hamlets of Burgstall & Schwendau have numerous private holiday rental apartments to choose from. There are a few commercial premises as well, all within walking distance of the ski lift.

A short distance up the valley from Mayrhofen at Finkenberg, Stock Resort Hotel provides 5-star resort style accommodation, only 200m from the new Finkenberger Almbahn gondola, which links directly to all of the upper Mayrhofen ski lifts. Tux Hotels, Apartments & Chalets

A few km down the valley is the village of Tux. Spread along the valley in two major centres (called Tux-Lanersbach & Tux-Vorderlanersbach), the village is served by two gondolas (Eggalmbahn and Rastkogelbahn) and numerous valley trails directly into the town. The village has all services (supermarkets, post office etc.) and provides easy access to not only Mayrhofen, but also Hintertux Glacier via the regular free local ski bus shuttle.

Best Places to Stay at Hintertux Glacier Ski Resort

At the end of the road from Mayrhofen, high in the Tuxertal, Hintertux Glacier ski resort has some impressive accommodation options, but they collectively lack the village atmosphere that one finds at Mayrhofen, Tux, Hippach et al. At first glance, lodging appears limited to the few hotels near the Hintertux lift base. Whilst these are certainly convenient if skiing Hintertux Glacier for multiple days, other options exist down the valley toward Tux and beyond which more readily link into the Mayrhofen ski resort.

The three hotel options at the base of the Hintertux Glacier lifts all have ski-in convenience direct from the excellent valley descent trail #1 - the 'Schwarze Pfanne'. They offer the ultimate accommodation near the ski resort with no need for bus transport once there, unless one wants to head down valley Mayrhofen or one of the other Zillertal ski resorts for the day. For all of their prime location, they are reasonably priced and have a full range of facilities. For après, relax up on the mountain before skiing down to the excellent Hohenhaus Tenne at the base area.
