Andermatt Bars, Restaurants & Nightlife

Andermatt has been transformed in recent years. Immense ski lift & terrain expansion, full interlinking between Andermatt & Sedrun’s Dieni lift base & train station, plus an increase in bed numbers with the creation of quality hotel & apartment options like the Chedi & Radisson Blu Hotel Reussen to name just a few changes. The transformation has improved mountain dining options. Coincidentally, in the Andermatt ‘old town’ & within the ski resort, there has been a subtle increase in style & quality of bar & restaurant offerings too – not a bad thing. Mountain Dining

Lunch at the new highest lifted point on this sunny side of the resort (2,600m) is worthwhile at Schneehüenerstock. Similarly, Oberalppass has two great venues (Alpsu & Piz Calmot) for a feed or drinks later in the day. It can be quite busy here at lunchtime.

The slopes of Sedrun are sprinkled with food & beverage offerings, the best of which are the smaller huts.

Some locations have improved markedly. At Gurschen, mid-mountain on Gemsstock, the newly renovated Mountain Food cafe & restaurant are now worth a look. If in doubt, BYO lunch or head back down into town via the home trails for a village lunch.

Up at Gütsch (2,300m), two new high-end restaurants (allegedly Michelin rated) have been built near the top of the gondola. Bookings are essential. Bring your best credit card! Alternatively the traditional Wachthuus mountain hut is just nearby. It serves lovely rösti, pasta and other dishes for a fraction of the cost of its neighbours, and in a true Swiss alpine atmosphere. the sunny terrace overlooking the valley can be good for a drink on warmer afternoons.

Best Après Ski Bars

Inevitably the first question of anyway when it comes to the food & drink department is where is the best après ski bar. Thankfully Andermatt Sedrun has a lively après ski scene that once started on the local trains. Unique in the world, the Après Ski Bar Train carriages provided music & libations on its regular journeys between Disentis & Andermatt, via Sedrun & Oberalppass. Sadly this 'must do' Andermatt experience ended in 2023, so now one has to look elsewhere.

In Sedrun, a few options on the hill provide some fine drink venues, the best being the hut near the base of terrain park. The sun rapidly disappears in the afternoon on the Sedrun side, so the best option is easily narrowed to the Big T bar (& disco!!) at Dieni. It fills up rapidly at the end of the day as it is close to the train station, base car park, lift base & valley return trail. Have a few sly grogs here before getting on the train back to Andermatt …..

With lions share of the skier population, Andermatt is the après centre. For ski-in apres drinks, the pop-up Himalaya bar on the home trail (the summer road) below Naetschen is great for a brew with a view over town. After that stop at the Biber Bar near the gondola base for awesome tunes, beer & watching the trains go by to destinations unknown. The lively bar across the road from the base of the Gemsstock gondola was closed this season, so anyone descending from there is best taking the home trail straight into the centre of the village and dropping in to the River House’s Bar Di Alt Apothek & the bar at Spycher.

Bars & Restaurants

Restaurant dining in Andermatt has gone up a few notches recently. In town, the lovely Enoteca 1620 is a perfect pre-dinner starter, as is the new Emporium (253). The Hotel Crown has the town''s best yurt bar! For value, it’s hard to beat an Andermatt Spritz (a traditional Aperol spritz with campari & mint added - yum!)and pasta from Il Fermento, plus waxing lyrical with the effervescent host is a highlight. The new Biselli restaurant in the Reussen complex across from the Radisson Blu Hotel is brilliant. Cheaper eats are still accessible with burgers, pizza & simple meals at all the aforementioned bars. Spycher has the best pizza.

At the Radisson Blu Hotel, Restaurant Spun is awesome for breakfast & ok for dinner. The main hotel bar is beautiful & a delightful spot for meeting all & sundry. A better dinner option across from the hotel is the previously mentioned Biselli - delicious.

Nightlife

We poor old Powderhounds prefer to be fresh with the dawn so the sampling of any nightlife beyond 10.30pm is restricted to the Pinte Bar & Club in the centre of Andermatt. It appears to fire up on the weekends, but the lack of 'real' nightlife in Andermatt can be quite disappointing to some visitors. So to avoid disappointment, understand that this is still a traditional Swiss village with very little nightlife. If nightlife at a ski resort is important head to France, or even better, Austria (St Anton, Ischgl). Anywhere other than in Switzerland .
