Where to Stay in Zermatt

The sprawling old mountain village offers an incredibly broad range of accommodation. Several wonderful ski-in ski-out options exist high above the town of Zermatt. In Zermatt itself, accommodation features many 4 & 5 star hotels where you can spend money galore and enjoy the luxury, fabulous food and stunning views of the dramatic Matterhorn. The beauty of Zermatt though is that every budget & taste is catered for, allowing everyone to experience their own perfect accommodation selection.

There is negligible ski-in ski-out accommodations in Zermatt village itself and what exists is not centrally located. The “town lifts” are the Gornergrat railway opposite the Zermatt train station, the Sunnegga funicular past the river and the Furi gondola - a 1km walk from the centre of town. Electric taxis, hotels shuttles & a bus system aid transportation between accommodation & lifts. Walking is nice too!

Zermatt Ski-In Ski-Out Accommodation

Several wonderful ski in ski out options exist high above the town of Zermatt catering to a range of budgets. They include the iconic Kulm Hotel Gornergrat 3100 at the end of the Gornergrat railway. The high altitude, unique features & location set it apart from all other lodgings in Zermatt. Further down the Gornergrat railway, the historic Riffelhaus 1853 provides another unique Zermatt experience. If you are watching your pennies, there are also several excellent and convenient 1 & 2-star hotels in central Zermatt (some with very cheap dormitory rooms) like the Hotel Bahnhof & Hotel Weisshorn. We recommend the following hotels as being best for anyone on a budget.

Other Accommodation Options

If Zermatt is booked out or just too expensive for your needs, an alternative is staying off the mountain in the nearby village of Täsch or further down the valley in the larger cities of Visp or Brig. All options will involve a train trip to Zermatt before getting to the ski lifts, but it is a small price to pay. Tasch is the final town before Zermatt where private cars can drive up the valley. Its numerous hotels can provide free parking, a bonus when staying there, as opposed to everyone else having to pay for parking if staying in Zermatt. Regardless of the alternatives, we recommend staying at least 2-3 nights in Zermatt itself to get the full experience of this unique location.
