Where is Lake Tekapo?
The town of
Lake Tekapo is located at the southern end of the lake of the same name, in the Mackenzie District of the South Island of New Zealand. The main street of the town is on highway 8, a popular tourist route between
Queenstown and Christchurch, with Tekapo being the approximate half way point. Tekapo is 227km southwest of Christchurch and 257km northeast of Queenstown, whilst the town of Fairlie is located 41km east of Lake Tekapo.
Ski Fields Nearby
Roundhill is only 32km from Tekapo (a half hour drive away) and the access road is very easy to drive relative to other NZ ski fields. See the

The
Fox Peak club field is 78km (75 minute drive) from Lake Tekapo past Fairlie.
The
Ohau ski field is a bit more of a commute. From Tekapo it is 94km to the Lake Ohau Lodge and then a further 9.6km (15-20 minute drive) to the Ohau snow field (see the
getting to Ohau page).
You’ll need to carry chains for all four of these ski fields. If you don’t have chains for your car, these can be hired from the Tekapo petrol station.

Heli Skiing Near Tekapo
Mt Cook Heliski provides heli
skiing within the Mt Cook National Park. The
Mount Cook village is a 105km drive from Lake Tekapo on a road that winds along the shores of Lake Pukaki. You’re unlikely to need chains to drive to Mt Cook.
Harris Mountains Heliski offer heli skiing trips in the nearby Ben Ohau Mountains.
