Ski Touring Norway - Senja, Tamok, & Lyngen

Off the Beaten Path Ski Touring Above the Arctic Circle

Overview

Based on their years of experience in Norway, our partners at Sherpas Ride have crafted an itinerary that highlights sea-to-summit island lines and the majestic peaks of the deeper Arctic region. The tour steers clear of the more popular parts of the northern Lyngen Alps, which tend to get crowded with Tromsø commuters and typical ski and sail tours. Instead the tour takes in the likes of Senja Island, inland peaks around Tamokdalen & Målselv, less frequented lines in the southern Lyngen Alps, and if circumstances allow, a visit to the fabled Kågen Island.

Senja is an island where rugged coastlines meet snowy peaks, and its beauty will leave you in awe. Tamokdalen is a world-class ski touring playground, typically offering calmer weather and more snow than the coastal areas. you will take on the incredible lines of southern Lyngen, and with the off-the-beaten-path options around the tour hut in Målselv, there’s plenty to explore in a variety of snow conditions. A tour can even be accessed by a dog sled. For an extra adventure, a speedboat can be arranged for a day on the secluded Kågen Island.

Tour Highlights

Ski tour the best mountains, snow, & descents (including summit to sea) in a variety of zones across Arctic Norway from a single base.

    • Experience the delights of ski touring in the rightfully famous Lyngen Alps.
    • Take a dog sled ride to access a ski tour near Målselv

    • Use a speed boat to access & explore the remote peaks of Kågen Island.

Skiing & Terrain

The tour will visit secluded places only accessed by ski touring or split boarding. The mission on this tour will be to ski a variety of backcountry terrain - powdery open lines, ocean runs, classic lines in the area, and couloirs (if conditions allow).

As a main attraction, Lyngen Alps is the place to go freeriding if you are looking for powder in Scandinavia. It is tucked into the mainland, so the snow is drier than in other coastal areas. Nearby, there are incredible mountains that are less travelled by ski-tourers in winter. The tour will also take a look at the rugged island of Senja, the world-class touring playground in Tamokdalen and off the beaten path tours around the tour's hut in Målselv. Options are limitless and the itinerary will be adjusted to your needs and current weather & avalanche conditions. Expect to ski around 1,000 to 1,200m vertical daily for 6 days.

Itinerary

Get to Tromsø via Oslo & spend the first night in a hotel in the city once touted as the 'Paris of the North'. On the following 6 days you will be driven by your guide to a variety of ski-touring location in Lyngen Alps, Tamok, Senja & Målselv. five nights will be spent comfortably in traditional Norwegian mountain hut. After the final days ski-touring, you will be driven back to your hotel in Tromsø for a final night on the town with your new group of friends. On all of previous trips, the northern lights (Aurora Borealis) have been seen, so you might be equally lucky.

See the full program detail via the Itinerary tab.

Accommodation & Meals

A highlight of this trip is the accommodation - a traditional Norwegian log cabin with a rich history. Tucked away in a remote location, it’s the perfect place to recharge your batteries after a day in the mountains. Meals will be bought, prepared & shared together as a group. For more info about accommodation and meals, see the Lodging tab.

Guiding & Equipment

The tour is led by certified mountain guides at a maximum ratio of 6 guests to 1 guide.

You will need to bring all your own ski touring & splitboard equipment including your own avalanche safety gear (beacon, probe, and shovel) plus an avalanche airbag backpack is also recommended, but not mandatory. Some equipment can be rented locally in Tromsø at a nearby rental shop, but it best to bring all your own gear.

Ability & Fitness Level

This trip is for those with previous ski touring or splitboarding experience (at least 3 tours). You should be able to cover at least 1000 vertical metres daily for 3 days straight. One day off is definitely a possibility, more than that would likely hinder your experience.

Itinerary for Ski Touring Norway - Senja, Tamok & Lyngen

Fixed date tours run for a week from Saturday to Saturday. The first & final nights are spent in Tromsø to ensure the best access to the airport.

Please arrive on Saturday for the first night in Tromsø. If your flight connection doesn’t work out, feel free to check options on booking.com for extra nights in Tromsø. We’re happy to provide suggestions. Your departure can be anytime on the next Saturday, starting from early morning. We may also be able to get you back to Tromsø for a Friday night departure (8pm or later).

Flexibility is the key and in this sample itinerary, you can find out what can be achieved. This itinerary will be adjusted according to weather conditions and requirements of the guests.

DAY 1 - Flight & Arrival

Flight to Tromsø via Oslo. Check into the city hotel.

DAY 2 - Pick-up in Tromsø & first Ski Tour

Pick-up from the hotel is followed by the group's first ski/splitboard tour in the Lyngen Alps on the way to the accommodation - the log cabin in Målselv. There are numerous options for the first ski tour, and decisions will be based on the avalanche forecast, snow conditions, and wind direction.

DAY 3 - Senja

Senja, nestled between Lofoten and Tromsø, is a true gem of Norway, offering dramatic coastlines, steep peaks, and picturesque fishing villages. Senja, often called ‘Miniature Norway,’ showcases a variety of landscapes and captures the essence of Norway all in a single island. A visit will be planned around the best weather window, aiming for a summit-to-sea descent with breathtaking views of Senja’s coastline. Most of the peaks tackled are around 900m high and based on the group’s preferences, it is possible to either add more peaks or ski multiple laps on a given peak.

DAY 4 - Tamokdalen

Tamokdalen, or Tamok Valley, is a beautiful 30km stretch in Troms, Norway. The valley floor sits at 200m above sea level, with peaks reaching up to 1,600m. Both sides of the road offer fantastic ski-touring options, giving the group flexibility to choose a route based on avalanche risk, snow, and wind conditions. The higher mountains and colder temperatures, combined with the valley’s more continental climate, often mean superb snow quality for powder turns.

DAY 5 - Ski in the Backyard at Målselv & Dog-sledding

The peaks near the cabin rise up to 1,500m, and with mountains all around, it’s entirely up to the group which ski tour is chosen. Based on a husky farm, if the conditions allow and the dogs are up for it, it is possible to access the ski tour by dog sled. (Dog sledding is an optional activity, subject to availability, and the cost will be arranged once in Norway.)

DAY 6 – Senja or Tamokdalen

Return to either Senja or Tamokdalen, depending on what was enjoyed most and where the snow conditions were best.

DAY 7 - Lyngen or Kågen Island

On the way back to Tromsø, the group will either tackle some of the Lyngen peaks or arrange a speedboat to Kågen Island. There, it is possible to ski different aspects on secluded peaks, while surrounded by the ocean. (Kågen is an optional activity, subject to availability, and the cost will be arranged once we’re in Norway).

Be dropped off at the hotel in Tromsø for a final night out on the town with your new group of friends!

DAY 8 - Departure

Say goodbye to Arctic Norway. Flight back home from Tromsø.

Log Cabin

For much of this ski tour, a cozy log cabin in Målselv located in the 'middle of nowhere' is the group's accommodation for 5 nights. It is a classic Norwegian log house with a long history. Set in a pine forest near a husky farm, you will enjoy a chilled stay. Plus, there is a sauna available for your use. The log cabin is strategically placed in the centre of some of the best touring spots you can access in the area. It has an open living room with a kitchen, 3 bedrooms in various configurations, plus shared bathroom and toilet facilities.
