Telluride Activities

Telluride has so much more to offer than just skiing and snowboarding. Other winter activities are diverse and cater to those who need to raise the adrenaline levels or seek some rest and relaxation.

Telluride Eco-Adventures (970-728-7300) are located in the Franz Klammer breezeway of the Mountain Village and can assist with bookings of various activities in the area.

Other Ski Activities

The San Juan backcountry hut system makes for some enjoyable odysseys whilst ski touring around the magnificent San Juan Mountains. Guided tours are available for all of the huts or just part of the trail system.

For a more affordable backcountry option, the closest snowcat skiing is near Silverton, 1.5 to 2 hours drive from Telluride. Silverton Powdercats (formerly El Diablo Snowcat Skiing) offers very fun powder skiing for strong intermediate riders and above.

Telluride is somewhat unique in that it’s possible to go cross-country skiing up on the mesas. At the top of the Sunshine Express, the TopAten Nordic and Snowshoe area offers 10km of groomed trails that afford gorgeous views. Beyond this area advanced Nordic skiers can continue onto other trails.

Family Activities

There are lots of Telluride activities that cater well to families. The family can go sledding on Firecracker Hill (south of the Town Park), take a sleigh ride, or skate on the pond in Mountain Village (skate rentals available) or the Town Park.

Adventure Activities

Another awesome way to enjoy the majestic views of the San Juan Mountains is to take a snowmobile tour with Telluride Snowmobile Adventures (aka Telluride Snowmobile). Check out Telluride’s mining history, visit a ghost town, have a soak in hot springs, or there’s the opportunity for some fun in wide open meadows. There are three standard tours offered by Telluride Snowmobile, catering from the absolute beginner through to the advanced rider who wants to tear up the POW. Pickups are available from town or Mountain Village. See our Telluride Snowmobile page for more information.

Other great activities include dog sledding with Winter Moon Sled Dog Adventures, or winter fly fishing with Telluride Outside. To further appreciate Telluride’s vistas there are glider rides available or hot air ballooning with San Juan Balloon Adventures.

For those with a true spirit for crazy adventures, Ouray Ice Park is about a 50 minute drive from Telluride. Ouray is the ice climbing capital of the world and there are various companies that offer guiding and tuition services.

Relaxation

Not surprising for such an upmarket town and resort, Telluride has a plethora of options for day spas or massage therapy. Telluride is pamper central!

The mega day spa is the Spa at the Peaks Resort. They have a huge number of treatment rooms and a large variety of treatments on offer. They even have an oxygen bar; great if you’re not coping too well with the altitude.

The Aveda Day Spa is located in the Camel’s Garden Hotel complex at the base of the gondola. This is more of a boutique day spa, yet they still offer a range of pampering and beauty treatments including massage, wraps, pedicure, manicures, waxing and facials. They also provide in-room and mobile services (that attract a travel fee and gratuity fee).
