Really Nice, but not for everyone

09/03/2025
Skied Whitefish two mid-week days in mid-February when temperatures were between -20F and 0. Definitely not crowded at that time and in those conditions, but far from empty. I arrived about 2 days after a solid 2-3’ of new snow that came over the weekend. Overall very good. Tons of terrain, plenty of steep bowls and chutes for advanced skiers, excellent grooming with tons of wide intermediates, though the blue intermediates really come in two types at least from the main summit, the long ridge lines and roads running across and around the mountain and runs with some surprising steepness at times down the middle (for intermediates). Beginners essentially have nothing up the mountain and should really stay towards the bottom and the beginner area to the side. That mountain layout is bad for mixed groups that include beginner/green skiers looking to ride up together and ski separately, but good for everyone else as it largely isolates the beginners to the bottom and side of the mountain.

One (petty?) disappointment for me was the lack of wide tree skiing on intermediate steep slopes…a personal favorite. The trail map gives the impression in its graphic that there are several off-piste glades that are more open and that one can drop into and ski, such as off Gray Wolf and Kodiak on the back side, between Heaven and Ranger Trail near Swift Creek, etc. This is not true in person. They are generally either much tighter glades (still skiable, but with much greater risk of hitting a tree well), steeper than it seems they should be from the map, or are actually cordoned off.

There are several slow chairs, including in Hellroaring, Chair 5, and Flower Power that limit the attractiveness of those parts of the mountain, but all the express lifts are nice. No trail maps on the lifts, but very good maps at the top of most of the main lifts, most of which also indicate what runs were groomed.

The mountain boasts a lot of ski-in/ski-out lodging, with more being built now, but do your DD depending on what’s important to you. In person it seems like most of these properties are Much really ski-in OR ski-out (not really both) given the layout, and the bulk of it is off to the beginner side of the mountain, which can be a tedious crossover to the main mountain even for skiers, and thus even worse for snowboarders.

On-mountain food options were above average from what I experienced. No danger of getting any Michelin stars, but for ski lodge food, pretty solid, good range of options, and not egregiously priced.

Overall, a very, very good mountain. Questionable for mixed level groups given the layout, but a destination that can absolutely cater to all levels as long as you can separate your group. The biggest downside, is what is already covered in the main review, which is the weather. In my two days, despite getting unlucky with the temperatures, I got one bluebird day, which put me in the 20% camp it seems. By all accounts from the guides and other regulars I chatted with, 75-80% of the time it’s overcast with clouds and low visibility. Most of the mountain is well tree-lined, which helps with contrast, but 90% of that terrain in turn is either groomed or pretty steep blacks. Not a lot of intermediate steepness ungroomed runs to choose from, apart from some stuff at the very top of the main mountain, but that seems to be where the low vis and cloud cover hits most often. And for those advanced skiers looking for the big wide open bowls, Whitefish has some, but unless you actively enjoy skiing those in low vis, don’t bank on those being as fun for your trip.

I’m here with a ski club from the east coast; there are nearly 40 of us. And the majority of our group agrees that we don’t want to waste another trip here again. Weather is usually horrible here. The runs are hardly ever groomed. The signs on the mountain on where the runs go are not nearly enough to what is needed and many of us get lost often and end up on runs we don’t intend on being on. There are way better places to ski.

Worst ski trip I've ever taken honestly. I was super stoked for this, my home mountain ABasin in Colorado so I was looking forward to the renowned PNW-lite powder and new freeriding terrain as a change of pace. It rained for 3 straight days and made the entire mountain a cruddy, sticky mess with insane avalanche risk. I expected poor visibility but this is pointless. Even when the fog clears for a couple minutes there appears to be hardly any signage where runs intersect making it extremely difficult to stay with your buddies unless you're tied together.

Probably a great mountain for locals that can come/go as the weather changes but for everyone else the low elevation makes it easy for rain to ruin your trip. If you've got a limited number of days to ski go someplace with more reliable conditions.

I wanted to like it, but didn’t. The mountain is small, and there’s one lift to get onto the mountain so you still wait in long lines. The weather was COLD and cloudy — never saw the sun! Apparently that’s the norm. It’s not easy to get to unless you live out west. There is no village — you have to drive into town and even then it’s tiny. As for the skiing itself — there are moguls everywhere! Not my family’s idea of fun. We’ll stick with Big Sky or Colorado resorts from here on.

Whitefish Mountain Resort is over rated. The runs are nice when you can see them. We had fog most everyday, we were told that there are very few days when the sun shines in winter.

There is nothing to do at the resort after 7:00, everything on the mountain closes. You have to drive or take a bus into town for dinner or drinks.

Needed warmer gloves. There were three shops, summit, village and base lodge, on the mountain and they all sold the same things. Nothing that would fit me.

I've been coming to this mountain for years because I have family in the area. It's a fantastic mountain and a great bargain compared to many similar resorts. Barring major holidays, it's generally uncrowned. If you're looking for some nice groomers, this is the place to go. There are plenty of blue runs with nice, even pitch. There is definitely some great advanced terrain as well, but sometimes you have to search for it. Lucky for me, my family members know all the good terrain, but I'm not sure I would find it on my own. The base lodge is great for families and there is also plenty of beginner terrain. The nightlife on the mountain isn't super inspiring, but the town of Whitefish has some great bars and restaurants. Definitely worth a visit!
