Shopping opportunities exist at the
Whitefish Mountain Resort, although they are somewhat limited. Downtown Whitefish is only a short drive (8 miles/13km) away and has all your shopping requirements covered. Even if you don’t have a car, the Snow Bus goes into the town of Whitefish throughout the day and late at night, stopping at all the major (and some not so major) shopping areas.
Lots of folks love shopping in Montana due to the absence of sales tax. However many items in Whitefish are subject to a resort tax albeit only 3%, so most of the locals go shopping in Kalispell.
Whitefish Ski Shops & Snowboard Stores – On-Mountain
At Whitefish Mountain Resort there are a few options for ski and snowboard gear. Base Lodge Traders (in the Base Lodge) has a range of ski and snowboard accessories such as goggles, hats, gloves, inner layers, and helmets. The Base Lodge Traders shop also sells a good range of Whitefish souvenirs and logowear.
There’s a little skiosk in the Summit House (up the top of the mountain as the name would suggest!) called the Summit Shop which sells very basic ski and snowboard apparel and accessories in case you’re freezing your butt off or you’ve lost something! This shop also sells some very cute Whitefish souvenirs for kids.
Snow Ghost Outfitters (Morning Eagle Boardwalk, Upper Village) has all your alpine skiing needs covered with apparel, accessories and hardwear. The boot fitters here are pretty good, and this ski shop also has skiwear available for the little folks.
For the knuckle draggers there’s Stumptown Snowboards (Morning Eagle building in Upper Village) which has a reasonable range of board gear and apparel. Just FYI – Whitefish also used to be called Stumptown because the area had been cleared for a train station.
Whitefish Ski Shops & Snowboard Stores – In Town
There are several Whitefish ski shops and outdoor stores downtown or on the periphery of Whitefish.
An excellent outdoors shop for the backcountry enthusiast is The White Room Mountain Shop. It stocks all the big brands and top quality gear and is located on Lupfer Ave in downtown Whitefish.
Sportsman & Ski Haus in the shopping complex south of downtown Whitefish has a wide range of skis, clothing and other snow related accoutrements. Prices are good.
Stumptown Snowboards also has a downtown shop (128 Central Ave, Whitefish MT).
General Shopping Whitefish
Central Avenue in downtown Whitefish is the one stop place for all things shopping. Boutiques, art, pottery, clothing, t-shirts and jewellery are all there.
Grocery Shopping
The Village Market is located in the Upper Village (Kintla Boardwalk) where you’ll find very basic groceries such as frozen meals, beer, wine and a handful of sundries and gifts. It’s only a very small grocery store so if you require some serious nosh, head into the town of Whitefish where you’ll find a Safeway and other larger supermarkets.
