Whitefish Activities

Apart from skiing and snowboarding at the Whitefish Mountain Resort, there are also various other Whitefish activities to do during winter.

Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is a short drive away (25 miles) from Whitefish. During winter, you can’t drive very far into the park. Only 11 miles of the Going to the Sun Road on the west side is maintained during winter, and a mile and a half on the east side. So aside from blissful solitude, there isn’t that much to do during winter except go skinning up the famous Going-to the-Sun Rd. Come here on a sunny day for lovely views across McDonald Lake.

Glacier Adventure Guides can arrange tours during winter such as guided snowshoe trips, ice climbing or cross country skiing or backcountry skiing tours. These can be a full day or half day in duration.

Whitefish Cat Skiing

If you want to score some fresh powder, you can head out cat skiing with Great Northern Powder Guides. Their lease is north of Whitefish up high in the Stillwater Forest area, and the team can pick you up from the Whitefish Mountain Resort and drive you out to their staging area if needs be. Advanced and expert riders should consider going snowcat skiing with GNPG for a day, as the terrain is lots of fun and fresh lines of powder are always fun! It’s really about quality not quantity though, because a standard day only includes approximately 9,000 feet of vertical skiing, about the equivalent of 3.8 top-to-bottom laps of the Whitefish Ski Resort.

Serious skiers and boarders looking to do a few days of cat skiing might be better served crossing the nearby border to check out one of the many Canada cat skiing operations where the runs are longer, the average vertical covered each day is 13,400 feet (4,094m), and there's more snow.

Adventure Activities

Dog sledding tours are available in the Whitefish area with a few operators. Generally the tours are pretty short, although one of the Whitefish dog sledding outfits can offer bespoke trips.

Or for those who want to explore the wilderness a little faster, there are Whitefish snowmobiling tours available with a few different operators. Tours run for 3 hours or the full day.

Relaxation

If you’ve trashed your body and mind on the slopes, you could rejuvenate at a day spa. The spa at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake is amazing and there are also a couple of day spas in downtown Whitefish.

Other Whitefish Activities

Downtown Whitefish has it all. Swimming pool, waterslides, ice rink, movie cinemas are but a few of the distractions you can undertake on down days.

Throw in the snowshoeing, sleigh rides................... And if that doesn’t grab you, why not participate in that great Montanan tradition – beer drinking!
